Tide gauge data rescue project released

12 January 2021

Today we are launching our new citizen science project where we are inviting the public to help us recover data from historic tide gauge ledgers from the North West of England and convert it into usable data. The ledgers, comprising of around 16,000 pages, focus on two locations: George's Pier in Liverpool, now the site of the Cunard Building, and Hilbre Island, a tidal island on the Wirral peninsula.

Volunteers can participate in the project through the Zooniverse website, and undertake as more or as little as they like. The task is simple, view images of the hand-written ledgers and add the figures you see into the corresponding comments on the online form.

When completed, the data from this project will be made available from the British Oceanographic Data Centre website, and monthly means will be included in the PSMSL dataset. We're hope to be involved in many more data rescue projects in the future, so please contact us if you wish to know more.
