24 May 1999 (part updated Feb 2002) Pelagic Tidal Constants, Pelagic Data and Tidal Constants from Coastal Gauges ----------------------------------------- Pelagic Tidal Constants ----------------------- In 1990 the IAPSO Commission on Mean Sea Level and Tides asked the PSMSL to oversee the production of an updated compilation of pelagic tidal constants to replace Publications Scientifiques Nos. 30 and 33 by Cartwright, Zetler and Hamon (1979) and Cartwright and Zetler (1985) respectively. That work was completed by Dr.Mike Smithson of the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory as: Smithson, M.J. 1992. Pelagic tidal constants - 3. IAPSO Publication Scientifique No.35. Published by the International Association for the Physical Sciences of the Ocean (IAPSO) of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics. 191pp. Reprints of this report may be obtained from Mike at the same address as the PSMSL. As the total number of constants has grown since PTC-3, in December 1995 Mike produced a list of amendments and additions in the same format as PTC-3. This also may be obtained from Mike at the PSMSL address. See also the second section of this file below. The pelagic tidal constants themselves are contained in the third section of this file below. There are several hundred sets of constants, 3 records (i.e. 3 lines of data) for each, as described in the second section below. Note also that the original time series of bottom pressures, from which a large fraction of the sets of tidal constants shown above were computed, can be accessed via the 'GLOUP' (Global Undersea Pressures) web pages: http://www.pol.ac.uk/psmslh/gloup.html Tidal Constants from Coastal Gauges (as of Feb 2002) ----------------------------------- Note that there exist other important data banks which contain information on tidal constants. Large compilations of tidal constants from conventional coastal gauges can be obtained from sources such as the UK Admiralty Tide Tables (ATT). See either the web link to the UK Hydrographic Office via the IHO web page below, or contact: Hydrographic Office Ministry of Defence Taunton, Somerset TA1 2DN United Kingdom Tel: (UK international code 44) 1823 - 337900 Until 2000, the International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO) used to provide the service of a central data bank for tidal constants operated by the Canadian Hydrographic Service. However, following a decision by a IHO in 2000, this data bank has now ceased and anyone requiring constants from a particular country will have to contact the hydrographic office of that country directly. There are web links and postal addresses of national offices which can be accessed via: http://www.iho.shom.fr/ This is obviously a major hurdle for people requiring constants from several countries or from the whole world. Requests for further information on the ATT Tables and the various national datasets should be addressed to these authorities and not the PSMSL. Meanwhile, the IOC GLOSS programme is working towards providing tidal constants for the subset of stations within the GLOSS networks. More information on this will be provided when available. However, a good start has been made with the computation of constants from the 'WOCE' set of gauges. To see those, click on: http://www.bodc.ac.uk and select 'Current Projects' and 'WOCE Sea Level Data' ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pelagic Data Formats and Updates -------------------------------- For each set: Record 1 Serial number, flag, latitude in degrees and minutes, 'N' or 'S', longitude in degrees and minutes, 'W' or 'E', start year, start day, end year, end day, length of deployment (or length of analysed dataset) in days, approximate depth in metres. Format: a7,a1,2x,i2,1x,i2,1x,a1,2x,i3,1x,i2,1x,a1, 3x,4i5,f7.1,i6 The serial number corresponds to the categories defined in publications PTC-1 and 2 and in the new edition. The 'flag' is either blank or '*'. '*' indicates some doubt about the validity of the data. Note that, for later deployments, there could be more than one entry for the same location and epoch. These originate from having more than one sensor on the rig. Record 2 Amplitudes in millibars (Format 8f6.1) for Q1,O1,P1,K1, N2,M2,S2,K2 Record 3 Corresponding Greenwich phase lags in degrees (8i6) Values of -1.0 or -1 indicate no data published for a particular constant Note that station 1.3.3, included in the earlier compilations, was dropped from No.35 as it was discovered to be incorrect. ********************* The following recent alterations have been made to the data set since the start of 1994: 21-Jan-94 Record 1.1.42 has been flagged as * since there is now a strong suspicion that it is incorrect. 21-Jan-94 Data from the Drake Passage has been added as records 4.2.21 - 4.2.26. Nos.4.2.21-23 are from three different sensors on the same rig for day 356/91 - 311/92 for the northern side of the Passage. Nos.4.2.24-26 are for day 357/91 - 312/92 for 3 different sensors on the same rig on the southern side. 7-Feb-94 Values for 1.3.19 have been replaced with corrected ones. 10-Feb-94 Phases for K2 for 4.2.24-26 corrected. 9-Mar-94 Values for 2.3.5 and 2.1.50-52 replaced with corrected ones. 1-Jul-94 Phases for 2.4.1 corrected. 6-Jul-94 Values added for: 1.4.29-31 (3 transducers on same rig) North Drake Passage, 4.2.27-29 (3 transducers on same rig) South Drake Passage, and 4.2.30-31 (2 transducers on same rig) 'Myrtle station' from the 92/93 Drake Passage deployments by POL. Also 4 new values added for the N.W.Pacific from the Meteorological Research Institute of Japan. These are 2.2.7-10 (4 deployments at the same place as 2.2.6 but for 4 successive later periods). These are obtained via a cable from 2200 metres!
